Florian Thate lives and works in Freiburg in Breisgau, Germany.
At the center of Florian Thate's (he/him) artistic practice is walking — as a method of approach, exploration and direct experience of landscape, materiality and space. In performative processes, Thate collects and examines industrial and natural materials — using physical, often physically challenging methods. These actions give rise to hybrid forms between image and object that are never purely documentary, but rather an expanded understanding of sculptural formations.

WALK WALK WALK WALK
2025 Photo series: poster printing
Variable dimensions
Installed on an advertising column near Freiburg-Wiehre railway station WALK WALK WALK WALK presents 14 large-format posters. Captured over years, the smartphone photographs record moments that contrast with idyllic narratives: traces of industrial agriculture, altered ecosystems, and infrastructural elements that coexist with, or interrupt, the natural land- scape. Alongside these visible marks, the images also follow quieter, everyday signs of change— subtle shifts that may escape the casual observer.
Walking is central to the artist’s practice—a method of engaging with place through embodied movement and close attention. The photographs reflect a long-term engagement with environmental transformation, from seasonal patterns to the cumulative effects of climate change and land use.
