Irene de Andrés lives and works in Madrid, Spain.
The work of Irene de Andrés (she/her) explores the evolution of leisure and free time within the working class. In the 18th century, the beginning of modern tourism occurred in synch with the first governmental regulations around paid holidays. At the same time, the sea emerged as an object of desire. In response to these shifts, specific architectures and infrastructures — such as spas and cruise ships — began to take shape. These spaces are central to the artist’s practice, serving as backdrops for film, sculpture, and graphic works that chart journeys through time and across bodies of water. Through these travels, Irene weaves together historical events that invite us to reflect on the dynamics of tourist consumption, the meaning of travel, and our relationship with what we call landscape.
