Irene Fernández Arcas lives and works between Berlin, Germany and the Mediterranean context.
Irene Fernández Arcas (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist working with installation, drawing, painting, sound, text, and performance. Her practice explores contemporary forms of health and the medical potential of art, grounded in ongoing research into domestic rituals, self-care, and the creative process. Her installations take shape as immersive environments made of painted textiles and collected objects — many of which are remnants from previous works — linking personal history with broader cultural narratives. Intuition, movement, humor, and emotion guide her approach to painting and performance.

Southness is an Attitude
2025
Pavilion: wood, textiles, chairs, cushions
Variable dimensions
Southness is an Attitude is a site-specific installation that takes the shape of a “chiringuito”—a modest beach bar reimagined in Freiburg. Traditionally found on the Spanish coast, “chiringuitos” are informal spaces where people gather after a swim to eat, rest, and share time together. This one, however, is not by the sea, but by the popular indoor pool Faulerbad. The installation draws attention to how the South is often imagined as a carefree destination—a place of sun, pleasure, and escape. Yet beneath these narratives lie complex realities: environmental degradation, exploitative tourism economies, and increasing climate vulnerability. Where some find rest, others carry the cost of that comfort.
